When Matt Smith departed the role in The Crown, Tobias Menzies stepped in as Prince Philip for Seasons 3 and 4 alongside Olivia Colman, who played the Queen.
Playing Philip has helped Menzies empathise with the royal and understand where his often prickly attitude came from.
“He’s funny. A lot of that comes out in both irritability, but also quips and jokes— some of them not great, famously kind of off-colour,” Menzies told Vanity Fair in 2020. “But I feel like they’re all expressions of a desire to slightly poke at the structure of things, punch holes in it, just sort of rattle it up a bit.
“That also feels like an important ingredient in his relationship with Elizabeth … it’s maybe been quite helpful for her over the years to have someone who is able to make her laugh, and kind of take it slightly less seriously, alongside her.”
For his incredible portrayal, Menzies scored a Golden Globe nomination in 2020 for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series.
