Armie Hammer has been a hot topic on social media since January 2021.
It started when an anonymous Instagram account, House of Effie, shared a series of messages allegedly sent by the actor, which detailed conversations with women about sexual fetishes. The messages — which have not been verified — explored fantasies of rape, BDSM and cannibalism.
Hammer said the messages were “bulls–t” and were a “vicious and spurious online attack” against him. As further claims were made against the actor online, his lawyer said in a statement that “any interactions were completely consensual”.
But things went from bad to worse on March 19 when a woman named came forward publicly and accused Hammer of violent rape and physical abuse during their on-and-off relationship from 2016 to 2020.
In response to the allegations, Hammer’s attorney, Andrew Brettler, released a statement to Variety, strongly denying the rape allegation and other claims.
“From day one, Mr Hammer has maintained that all of his interactions with [the woman] and every other sexual partner of his for that matter — have been completely consensual, discussed and agreed upon in advance, and mutually participatory,” Brettler said in the statement.
“[The woman’s] attention-seeking and ill-advised legal bid will only make it more difficult for real victims of sexual violence to get the justice they deserve.”
As Hammer prepares to voluntarily check himself into a treatment program this week, here’s a rundown of how the scandal unfolded.
Who is Armie Hammer?
Armie Hammer is a 34-year-old actor who appeared on TV shows such as Gossip Girl and Reaper before his big break in the 2010 film The Social Network.
The actor then went on to star on the big screen in Nocturnal Animals, Hotel Mumbai, Call Me By Your Name and, most recently, the Netflix movie Rebecca.
He was married to actress Elizabeth Chambers for 10 years up until their split in July 2020. The couple share two children: daughter Harper, six, and son Ford, four.
What rape claims have been made against Armie Hammer?
As of March 19, Hammer is currently being investigated by the LAPD in light of claims of a violent encounter with a woman.
The woman recalled an alleged sexual assault by Hammer at a Zoom press conference alongside her attorney, Gloria Allred.
The woman accused Hammer of a violent rape during their on-again, off-again relationship between 2016 to 2020.
“On April 24, 2017, Armie Hammer violently raped me for over four hours in Los Angeles, during which he repeatedly slapped my head against a wall bruising my face,” she said.
“He also committed other acts of violence against me to which I did not consent.”
Hammer has denied the allegation, with his lawyer Andrew Brettler releasing the below statement to Variety.
“[Her] own correspondence with Mr Hammer undermines and refutes her outrageous allegations. As recently as July 18, 2020, [she] sent graphic texts to Mr Hammer telling him what she wanted him to do to her. Mr Hammer responded making it clear that he did not want to maintain that type of relationship with her,” Brettler wrote.
“It was never Mr Hammer’s intention to embarrass or expose her fetishes or kinky sexual desires, but she has now escalated this matter to another level by hiring a civil lawyer to host a public press conference. With the truth on his side, Mr Hammer welcomes the opportunity to set the record straight.
“From day one, Mr Hammer has maintained that all of his interactions with [the woman] — and every other sexual partner of his for that matter — have been completely consensual, discussed and agreed upon in advance, and mutually participatory. [Her] attention-seeking and ill-advised legal bid will only make it more difficult for real victims of sexual violence to get the justice they deserve.”
Soon after, it was confirmed Hammer was being investigated by the LAPD.
During the press conference, Allred would not comment on whether her client was behind the social media account, House of Effie.
Is Armie Hammer a cannibal?
The screenshots of Instagram DMs (direct messages) allegedly sent by Hammer were first leaked on the Instagram account House of Effie on January 10, 2021.
The anonymous administrator claims to have been in a relationship with Hammer, during which they allegedly exchanged explicit messages.
But the actor allegedly had numerous other affairs with other women, who have also shared their unverified messages text messages on the Instagram account.
One message sent appeared to detail the sender’s appetite for drinking a woman’s blood.
“I need your blood. I crave it,” the sender wrote.
While in another message sent, the sender wrote, “I am 100 per cent a cannibal.”
Again, these messages have not been verified.
Who made the Armie Hammer cannibal claims?
Not much is known about the woman behind the Instagram account House of Effie, or who officially made the cannibal claims.
But the anonymous administrator behind the account is believed to have had a relationship with Hammer. She has accused him of emotional and physical abuse as have other women linked to the actor.
“For those of you saying it’s not real, I personally have been hearing these stories from MULTIPLE girls who had past flings with him. I didn’t think much of it until I saw these messages,” the admin told her 107k followers.
“Be safe out there y’all these people are among us and it’s NUTS.”
Does Armie Hammer have a private Instagram account?
Weeks after the messages were leaked online, it was revealed Hammer has a private Instagram account in which he posts under the name El Destructo.
According to various outlets, Hammer has shared a series of questionable posts, including a video of himself vaping and undergoing random drug tests pertaining to his current custody case. He also shared a video of a lingerie-clad woman in his hotel room, who her referred to as “Miss Cayman”.
“Well… my ex (for a very good reason) wife is refusing to come back to america with my children,” Hammer said in the clip. “So I have to go back to Cayman… which sucks. Except there are a few silver linings. Like f—ing Ms. Cayman again while I’m down there.”
Since his split from Chambers, Hammer has divided his time between the US and Cayman Islands, where his children live with his estranged wife.
The video has since gone viral, angering the Miss Cayman Islands Universe Committee for implying the woman was affiliated with the organisation.
Hammer swiftly apologised for the video and his comments, while subsequently confirming the private Instagram account did belong to him.
“I would like to clarify that the person in my video, which was stolen from my private Instagram, is not Miss Cayman,” Hammer said in an audio message to local news site Cayman Compass.
“I am genuinely sorry for any confusion my foolish attempt at humour may have caused. My deep sympathies to Miss Cayman, who I don’t know, and to the entire organisation, as I had no intentions of implying she was actually Miss Cayman.”
Has Armie Hammer’s estranged wife Elizabeth Chambers spoken out?
One month after the allegations were first made, Hammer’s wife broke her silence on the scandal.
“For weeks, I’ve been trying to process everything that has transpired. I am shocked, heartbroken, and devastated,” Chambers wrote in a statement shared on Instagram.
“Heartbreak aside, I am listening, and will continue to listen and educate myself on these delicate matters. I didn’t realize how much I didn’t know.”
Chambers said that her thoughts and support are with the alleged victims and prayed they get the chance to heal.
“My sole focus and attention will continue to be on our children, on my work and on healing during this incredibly difficult time,” she added. “Thank you for all of the love and support, and thank you in advance for your continued kindness, respect, and consideration for our children and me as we find ways to move forward.”
Chambers filed for divorce from Hammer in July 2020. In her filing, she has requested primary physical custody and joint legal custody of their two young children.
Has Armie Hammer’s team spoken out about the claims?
While Hammer has called the claims “bulls–t”, his lawyer also released another statement after one of the actor’s ex-girlfriends spoke out about their alleged BDSM relationship.
“He wanted to find a doctor in LA, so that he could remove one of my ribs, as ‘you do not need it,’ and then barbecue it and eat it while I watch,” Lorenze claimed.
Hammer’s lawyer Andrew Brettler told Us Weekly the allegations were “patently untrue”.
“Any interactions with this person, or any partner of his, were completely consensual in that they were fully discussed, agreed upon, and mutually participatory,” his lawyer said.
“The stories being perpetuated in the media are a misguided attempt to present a one-sided narrative with the goal of tarnishing Mr. Hammer’s reputation, and communications from the individuals involved prove that.”
Why did Armie Hammer voluntarily seek treatment?
Armie Hammer reportedly checked into a treatment program in the wake of sexual violence and emotional abuse allegations.
On June 8, Vanity Fair reported the actor checked into an in-patient facility in Orlando, Florida, for drug, alcohol and sex issues.
According to the publication, the actor departed the Cayman Islands on May 29 — where he was staying to be closer to his children — for the first time since the March 19 press conference in which he was accused of violent rape and physical abuse.
Vanity Fair also reported that Hammer reached out to his wife, Elizabeth Chambers, at the end of May and told her that he was ready to seek help and is willing to stay for “as long as it takes to get healthy”.
Hammer was also supposedly seen arriving at the Grand Cayman airport by a social media user, who said they saw the actor walking with his estranged wife, Elizabeth Chambers, and their two children.
“I saw them at the GCM early on Sat morning,” the witness wrote. “Elizabeth and kids dropp[ed] him off and walk[ed] in as far as allowed. A lot of hugs and seemed emotional.”
How has Hollywood reacted?
Shortly following the scandal, Hammer stepped away from Shotgun Wedding, his upcoming rom-com with Jennifer Lopez. The actor has since been replaced with Josh Duhamel.
Hammer was also reportedly forced to exit The Offer, the highly-anticipated series about the making of The Godfather.
The actor’s agency and personal publicist also parted ways with him over the weekend.
