John Wick: Chapter 3 was called Parabellum, which is Latin for “Prepare for War”.
Hagkure is known as The Book of the Samurai. It translates as “Hidden by the Leaves” and is drawn from a collection of commentaries by the clerk Yamamoto Tsunetomo, former retainer to Nabeshima Mitsushige, the third ruler of what is now Saga Prefecture in Japan.
These were compiled during his conversations with Tsunetomo from 1709 to 1716 and form a practical and spiritual guide for a would-be warrior.
The book debates the difficulties of maintaining a warrior class in the absence of war, and the author is nostalgic for the time of the samurai, which had already passed before he was born.
It became required reading for US commanders during World War II as a way to understand the driven fighting nature of the Japanese.
As clues to the plot of a John Wick movie may be able to be found in these subtitles, it may be worth considering that Hagakure claims that bushido is really the “Way of Dying” or living as though already dead. In order to defend his lord, the Samurai must be willing to die at any moment.
Other interpretations claim it states that with the constant awareness of death, people can achieve a transcendent state of freedom, whereby “it is possible to perfectly fulfill one’s calling as a warrior.”
Either way, this could point to a pretty grim outlook for John Wick.
Lionsgate is yet to comment but we know the movie was partly shot in Japan. Are the ancient lords the High Table and the assassins their samurai?
