Kevin Smith is well known for two things really, fat people hockey jerseys and being a large fan of comic books. He might be kind of known for directing movies too, I guess.
He has some… unique ideas for casting, let’s say, for some of the characters he’d like to see in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Smith, on an episode of his podcast stated that he’d like to see Arnold Schwarzenegger in the role of Galactus and Bruce Willis as the iconic hero, Silver Surfer.
Those are two of the biggest names when it comes to action movies, more so from the 80s and 90s.
Smith had these thoughts when asked who he would cast Schwarzenegger as in the Marvel movies. Next to Sly Stallone, who is already part of the shared MCU. He then added Bruce Willis to the mix. He also added Planet Hollywood, which the trifecta were backers for in 1991:
“I want to see him in a big funny hat, I want to see him eating planets. Then you’ve got your Stallone, you’ve got your Schwarzenegger, and then in your Planet Hollywood triumverate, you get [Bruce] Willis to play The Silver Surfer.”
For those that don’t read comic books or, are like me, and mostly dabble these days, Galactus is a powerful alien that eats planets. He likes to wear a giant purple helmet and has had a few run-ins with The Fantastic Four and Avengers.
He was also the big bad guy in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, you’ll recognize his and the giant storm cloud.
Silver Surfer is one of the most well-known heroes in Marvel, he played a part in the Infinity Gauntlet comic books. He’s a humanoid character that sacrifices his freedom in order to save his planet from the aforementioned Devourer of Worlds, Galactus.
Both of these characters have been rumored in the past of making their way into the MCU, most notably after Disney spewed money out of their wallet to buy Fox and get those licenses back.
Although I’d love to see a Silver Surfer movie with Galatus as the antagonist, I hope they are getting better people for those roles. Then again, as bad as Batman and Robin is, Schwarzenegger as Ice Man was magic.
Maybe Kevin Smith is onto something.
